Integrity WallTM Story
South Shore Iron Works has been a leader in the steel construction industry for 85 years. Quality products, great service and an unwavering quest to excel in everything they do have made SSIW what it is today. South Shore Iron Works was established in 1924 by Ben Smith and Lawrence Cass. They proudly furnished miscellaneous architectural iron and structural steel to Chicagoland from their original South Shore neighborhood location.
In 1957, Herbert Hartmann, a long-time iron worker and South Shore’s shop superintendent, acquired ownership interest and control of the firm. South Shore Iron Works was moved to the Roseland neighborhood during construction of the Chicago Skyway. From their new location, Mr. Hartmann and his son Fred continued to build South Shore Iron Work’s success and reputation for integrity.
In 1989, Fred Hartmann became president and owner of South Shore Iron Works and has driven success through process improvement and innovation. His focus on quality and attention to detail was rewarded in 2006 when South Shore Iron Works became the first AISC certified wall panel fabricator in the country. Innovation continues with the unveiling of Integrity WallTM in 2009. Integrity Wall is a revolutionary structural building innovation for mid-rise structures that shortens construction time and reduces building costs compared to traditional methods. Fred Hartmann’s son Derek has joined South Shore Iron Works and is learning to continue the legacy of three generations of Hartmann men.
Fred Hartmann: President
Fred Hartmann, a life-long resident of Chicago, is a second generation ironworker and businessman. He has guided South Shore Iron Works through large and small projects which have contributed to the building of Chicago. His vision, dedication to quality and pursuit of efficiency has created a result-focused environment fueled by continual process improvement and innovation. Mr. Hartmann’s vision made him one of the first to apply FabTrol, Argos, and StruCAD to the design and production process. South Shore Iron Works, as a result, has benefited from increased quality and control of the manufacturing process, from design to finish. Their shop is able to handle jobs of great complexity and has increased shop through-put with consistent quality. Mr. Hartmann’s passion for innovation and excellence leads South Shore Iron Works into the next chapter of significant and successful contributions to the construction industry, by the introduction of Integrity WallTM.
